The best Christmas gifts are the ones that get used. Not kept in a drawer, not passed on, but pulled out every week until they become part of someone's home. Linen is that kind of gift: it is practical, it looks beautiful on the table and it gets softer with every wash.

Here are seven linen gift ideas, from a small hostess gift to a present for the whole family.

1. A Set of Linen Napkins

For the friend who loves to host. A set of four or six napkins in one color is a classic, and a mix of two shades (red with green, sage with white) looks like you chose it just for them. Our Christmas & New Year linen napkins come in festive colors and in every size from cocktail to dinner.

2. Kitchen Towels for the Cook

Linen towels dry glasses without lint and dry quickly themselves. A pair in red and green is a gift that goes straight onto the oven door. See our Christmas linen kitchen towels.

3. Placemats for Everyday Dinners

Placemats are the gift for someone who has a beautiful wooden table and does not want to cover it. Our linen placemats are sold individually, so you can order two for a couple or eight for a big family.

4. A Table Runner

A runner fits almost any table, which makes it a safe choice when you do not know the exact size. Red for Christmas, natural beige or milk for the rest of the year. Have a look at our linen table runner.

5. Embroidered Napkins for the Family

For parents, grandparents or newlyweds: napkins with a monogram, a family name or a logo. Our embroidered linen napkins are made in sets of 12. Embroidery takes extra time, so this is the gift to order first.

6. Linen Pillowcases

A quieter gift, and one people rarely buy for themselves. Linen stays cool in summer and warm in winter. Browse our linen pillowcases.

7. A Tablecloth for the Host of the Year

If someone hosts Christmas dinner every year, a linen tablecloth is the gift they will remember. You will need the size of their table: read our tablecloth size guide, then choose a round or rectangular one.

How to Wrap a Linen Gift

  • Fold the napkins or towels into a neat stack and tie them with twine or a ribbon.
  • Tuck in a sprig of fir, a cinnamon stick or a dried orange slice.
  • Add a handwritten tag. No wrapping paper needed, the linen is the wrapping.
